The Young Inventor’s Club

Empowering Children To Invent The Future!

THE PROBLEM

The idea for The Young Inventor’s Club was born as a result of the Pridhams’ original book series If Not You, Then Who? which inspires children to think creatively and learn about inventions. The authors, David and Emberli Pridham, wanted to empower children to become more inventive and build a more interactive community around their series. They had a vision of building an educational platform that could provide children, parents and educators a space to learn, collaborate and inspire, but they needed help with the creation and execution.

THE SOLUTION

A web-based educational platform with separate portals for parents and educators, that gives users access to S.T.E.A.M. activities that pair well with the If Not You, Then Who? book series. Upon subscribing, users gain access to monthly blogs and newsletters that provide fun S.T.E.A.M. based activities to complete. Activities are showcased on the club’s Instagram page for further instructions and engagement.

The Platform

Designing and building a subscription-based application that gives its user free access to S.T.E.A.M activities for children grades K-5, meant that we needed the activities! Working together with a teacher we designed 6 sets of 12 downloadable and printable activities that meet the common core standards.

Next, alongside a small team of developers and digital strategists, I lead the design work from conceptualization to the launch of the website and dashboard. The process included conducting UX research, building user flows and wireframes, to ultimately designing an engaging and easy-to-use user interface.

Building Community

The goal of building the platform was to empower children to become more inventive and build a more interactive community around the If Not You, Then Who® book series. To do this we began to attract potential members through building community on social media and running compelling display ads.

In addition to the display ads and social media content, we wanted to make the experience more engaging. To do this we worked with a videographer to film videos for the youtube channel. I provided creative direction and gave the videographer brand guidelines and design feedback. The end result was a set of instructional videos that users could follow along while completing the S.T.E.A.M activities.

Generate Hype

Sometimes people need a little more excitement to get them on board. To create more hype around joining the club, we ran a campaign where I had designed eye-catching video ads that informed parents and teachers of The Young Inventor’s Showcase where their children could submit their invention ideas for a chance to win fun and educational prizes!
